Everett Lumpkin is a founding member of the Colorado Dahlia Society which is holding its 40th Annual Show in 1998. Everett chaired the committee which brought the 1975 National Show of the American Dahlia Society to Denver. Although a bit less active today, Everett still raises over 100 dahlias in a 20 by 26 foot (6m X 8m) corner of this backyard.

The Lumpkin's dahlia garden is nestled in a far corner of the backyard and is virtually all raised beds. In the past, the Lumpkins also owned the lot to the right of the picture where they raised upwards of 1,000 dahlias. |

The raised beds shown in this picture, were designed to be permanent and safe. Note the cement pavers tightly fitted into the walkways between the beds. The beds have also been filled with a soil mixture that betters the native blow sand gracing this part of the American High Plains. |

Look at the size of those Dahlias! Looks like Zorro and Inland Dynasty. And, of course, Mr. Lumpkin himself--a longtime member of the Colorado Dahlia Society. In fact, most of us newer members consider him and his wife to be pioneering dahlia enthusiasts in the State of Colorado. |

Everett uses sturdy 2" by 2" stakes for a support system, supplemented with plant cages. The stakes hold the plant cages securely in place so that little tying is required. |
