The Lawrence Dahlia Patch

The Garden of Ben and Louise Lawrence

This aerial view of the Lawrence property shows (1) Shade covered beds for 400 dahlias, (2) Non-shaded beds for 300 dahlias, and (3) Flower bed featuring 25 AA dahlias with other annual flowers. Two other large beds display a few dahlias with other annuals and perennials. Eight small dahlia beds line the east boundary of the property. A small greenhouse (not visible) is to the right of the shade-covered beds behind the large cottonwood tree. The shade material can be rolled to the top of the structure by a rope and pulley system.

The framework supporting the 30 percent shade material is visible in this picture. For more information click here. The structure shown is 24' by 50' and, subsequent to this picture, has been extended to 48' by 50' providing shade for 480dahlias. Fences, or an electric fence, follow the periphery of the various flower beds and garden areas to discourage the two Samoyeds from entry. They are permitted in the dahlia patch as long as they stay on the carpet.

The shade material and a small portion of the black plastic pipe of the misting system is visible above the head of Ben Lawrence. The misting system consists of 1/2 inch plastic pipe attached to the rafters at 12 foot intervals with very fine misting nozzles inserted every 6 feet. The temperature under the shade material drops dramatically when the system is turned on. Typically, it is operated for one minute twice daily when the temperature exceeds 80 degrees.

The walkways between beds are covered with used carpet. Strategically placed bamboo poles support lateral wires that provide support for the dahlias as they mature. Each row of dahlias has a soaker hose attached to a timed system to provide water. Pine bark mulch is used to retain moisture, protect the soil from the heat of the sun and assist slightly by lowering the high pH of the clay soil.
